Treatment 1: Doubles Life Expectancy

Average life expectancy with no treatment: About 12 months

Average life expectancy with treatment: Three to five years. (Source) 70% will live for two years or more, and some will live for more than five years. One study found that patients lived 7 years after the procedure.

 

CRS-HIPEC is a treatment that doubles peritoneal mesothelioma patient’s life expectancy.

“CRS-HIPEC” stands for Cytoreduction and HIPEC.

It’s a mix of two treatments – surgery and chemotherapy.

Researchers have found that combining two or more treatment types is the most effective way to treat peritoneal mesothelioma.

CRS-HIPEC is now the standard of care for peritoneal mesothelioma patients if they are strong enough for it. 

With this treatment, the surgeon removes as much of the cancer as possible. This is called debulking. They also remove part of the lining of the abdomen (called a peritonectomy).

Then, during the surgery, they pump warm chemotherapy medicine into the abdomen to kill any cancer cells that are left.

The surgery can take 10 to 12 hours. There is also a difficult recovery period. Only 40% of patients are strong enough to have this surgery.

Some doctors will follow the surgery with chemotherapy. One study found this to add about 12 months to the patient’s life.

 

Treatment 2: Increases Life Expectancy by 5X

Average life expectancy with no treatment: About 12 months

Average life expectancy with treatment: 70% of patients are still alive after 5 years. Some live up to 19 years!

 

The CRS + HIPEC + EPIC + NIPEC  treatment has shown to 5X peritoneal mesothelioma patients’ life expectancy.

This treatment begins with the CRS-HIPEC surgery noted above.

Then, the surgeon then uses something called “Early Postoperative Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy” (EPIC).

This is a drug that is given through the abdomen for five days after surgery.

After that, the doctor will use another chemotherapy procedure.

This one is called “Long-Term Normothermic (unheated) Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (NIPEC-LT).

NIPEC is a “rinse” of the abdomen that’s also done through a tube and is repeated over time.

Without surgery and HIPEC, patients live for about one year.

But with surgery and HIPEC plus NIPEC, survival is more than five years. With long-term NIPEC added, 70% of patients are still alive after five years. (Source)

Dr. Paul Sugarbaker (who also invented the surgery and HIPEC technique) is the first doctor to use NIPEC for peritoneal mesothelioma.

In one study, he used it with 29 patients. Four patients lived for 8, 13, 18, and 19 years. Two died after surviving for 15 years. 75% of the patients survived for 5 years or more.

 

My Treatment: How I Lived 23X Longer Than Expected… (And Counting…)

When I was diagnosed in the summer of 1997, HIPEC and all the other new treatments weren’t available.

They didn’t exist yet.

And even if they did, I had Stage 4 peritoneal mesothelioma.

My doctors told me it was too late for any traditional treatments and I should get my affairs in order.

I wouldn’t make it to Christmas.

But I wasn’t ready to die.

Not yet.

I was only 52.

My quality of life was good, and I wanted to keep it that way.

So as soon as I was told that I only had a few months to live…

My wife and I immediately set about researching as much as we could on every aspect of mesothelioma… as well as cancer in general.

I felt like a first-year medical student…

I barely slept.

I had to learn about all kinds of treatments and therapies.

The amount of things I had to learn was beyond overwhelming.

But it was worth it.

All those late nights, weeks of research and countless books eventually saved my life.
